Formed in 1984 in Hall and now based at the Canberra City Band Hall at Watson it performs at many events and concerts in Canberra and surrounding districts. Over the last decade it has won contests at the State and national level. It owes much of its success to the early musical leadership of Tom Russell, Les Alley, Stan Galloway, Les Smith and Peter Robertson, and more recently, musical directors Thomas Burge, Aaron Madden and Colin Fischer MBE. Its current musical director is Viv Martin.
Not to blow our own horn, but Canberra City Band is a pretty great organisation to be a part of, and a nationally recognised A-grade concert band. We welcome new players of any level to our organisation and invite Canberra to join us in our love of music at public events like the Canberra Times Fun Run!
Tanamasi was founded by Wayne and his wife Miriam. Drumming since 2005, Wayne and Miriam have embraced and shared all facets of West African Music, from playing djembe and dunduns to building them for himself and others in the Canberra region. Tanamasi is a traditional Malinke greeting which literally translates to “did you sleep without evil”. The Malinke empire was one of the largest and most long lived empires in the history of Africa, and it’s rulers were responsible for an area stretching from Senegal in the west to Nigeria in the east, from as far north as the Sahara to the coast of Guinea. This music dates back about 700 years, and Tanamasi strives to play it the old way, with some modern touches. Music is central to life in Africa, and it accompanies births, deaths, marriages, harvests and celebrations.

Nobody brings rock'n'roll energy with a modern charm quite like Canberra's Foreign Kings. Their sound is a killer mix of huge riffs, pounding drums, wailing rock'n'roll vocals and blistering guitar solos. It is full of contrasts: bluesy yet rocky; current yet old school; catchy but uncompromising. Nowhere is this more obvious than when experienced in the flesh, where their sound, presence and incredible energy infects you, and leaves you begging for more. They are truly an unmissable live act.
Foreign Kings was formed when five young dudes with a shared love of rock and roll, long nights and living the dream came together at a house party in Canberra in the summer of 2014. Within twelve months they had played sold out shows and built a die-hard fan base in their hometown. With a lack of like-minded bands on the scene, Foreign Kings soon found themselves turning heads wherever they played and satisfying people’s deepest desires for raw, unfiltered, balls-to-the-wall rock and roll.
