The first Canberra Times Family Fun Run was held in 1976 to commemorate the paper’s 50th anniversary. The original 9.6 km route started at the Trademan’s Club, in Furzer Street, Phillip. Runners turned into Launceston Street ran up to the intersection with Melrose Drive turned north and ran through to Yarra Glen.  From then on the route was the same as today’s route.

To enable the course to be recognised by Athletics Australia as a certified accurate 10km course, in 1986, well-known Canberra athlete Dave Cundy undertook to measure and re-route the run so that it could be officially registered. The new starting point was Yamba Drive, Phillip near its intersection with Justinian Street. The additional distance to Yarra Glen made up the 0.4km.

The fastest recorded time for the 10km course is held by Rob de Castella in 29 minutes and 1 second for the 1990 run. Krishna Wood set the fastest time for women in 1986 when she crossed the line in 32 minutes and 20 seconds.  In 1991 she was closely followed by Olympian, Lisa Ondieki who ran 32 minutes and 22 seconds. Over the years, the times obtained by the leading women runners have increased while the winning times achieved by men have remained within 2 minutes and 12 seconds of race record. From 1985 to 1995, Gerard Ryan won four Family Fun Runs.
